Editing

Transition: Moving through shots from one to another.

Continuity Editing: Makes the transitions smooth, not disrupting the viewer, uses 180 degree rule.

Axis Match: Same camera angle through multiple shots.

Cross Cut/Parallel Cut: Follows two + scenes to show that they're happening simultaneously. 

Direction Match: When the direction of the of a person or object is consistent across the cut.

Dissolve: Two shots on top of each other, the first dissolves to reveal the second. 

Duration and Pacing: The length and rhythm of shots.

Long Take: Any shots over seven seconds long. 

Eye-Line Match: When two characters look like they're talking to each other because of the direction of their glances shown in the camera angle. 

Fade-In: Gradual lightening of image from black to white.

Fade-Out: Gradual darkening of image from white to black. 

Graphic Match: Juxtaposition of graphically similar images. 

Iris-In: Image appears from blackness through an expanding circle. 

Iris-Out: Image disappears through a shrinking circle. 

Movement Match: Action begun in one shot and continued in the next. 

Straight Cut: Two shots joined together with no continuity devices. 

Jump Cut: A break or jump created through removing a section of a shot then splicing together what remains of it - appears jerky.

Sound Bridge: Sound links images through continuing between shots.

CGI: Computer generated images.

Slow Motion: Shots slowed down.

Fast Motion: Shots sped up.

Sound

Non-Diegetic: Sound put on top of the scene and is not in any way natural from within the scene.

Diegetic: Realistic sound that are naturally created within the scene.

Non-Diegetic

Title Music: Theme tunes.

Score/Incidental Music: Music, usually orchestral, used to create tone/tension. 

Leitmotifs/Sound Motifs: Sound associated with a certain character or event. 

Sound Effects: Used to create atmosphere. 

Voice Over: Used to give the viewer and insight into and event or a character's mind, setting the scene or progressing the narrative. 

Diegetic

Synchronous Sound: When the sour matches what you can see on the screen. 

Sound Effects: Realistic sounds that match the action on the screen, often foley. 

Dialogue: Character's speaking. 


Ambient Sound: Natural background noise that would be associated with the scene.
